Tilt and sectional garage doors have automatic openers centred above the door in the garage ceiling, while roller garage doors have their openers mounted on the side of the garage door.
The first signal that your opener isn’t functioning properly is usually when the garage door refuses to lift properly, or only lifts the door a fraction off the ground. From here, there are several questions we need to explore in order to diagnose the problem properly, some (but not all) questions might be:
- What condition are the garage door springs in, and is this impacting the action of the opener?
- Does the opener machine make a different noise than usual?
- Has there been a change in the power source from which the opener is connected to?
- How long since the garage door and door opener has been serviced?

Evaluating whether to fix or replace your garage can depend on a number of things:
What is the age of your garage door?
Most garage doors have a certain lifespan, and with a high frequency of use, many parts need repairing and replacing sporadically. If the gears are failing, or if there is a problem with the circuit board, we can help advise the safest and most cost-effective way to either repair or replace your garage door.
What brand is your garage door opener?
With over 30 years experience in New Zealand, we are very familiar with all brands of doors, and the quirks that are associated with each style and variety. Some of the brands have known problems which we can help identify over the phone.
Why does it matter if my garage door opener is unbranded?
As with other electrical items, there is a broad range of options available at different price points. Our strong advice is to use a reputable brand of motor, compliant with NZ Electrical and Safety Standards. In addition, larger and more established brands have a better range of parts and have products designed to meet local needs and conditions. For this reason, we often recommend Merlin.
How frequently has your garage door been serviced?
Like your car, your mower, and other electrical items that have a high frequency of use, keeping them well maintained will cost a little more in the short term, but should give you many years of safe, reliable service. In addition, your service technician has the opportunity to provide feedback on the condition of your door, and highlight when things might need replacing.
We will do our best to diagnose the issue as much as we can over the phone, so we can guide you towards the best solution for you, being sensitive to times and costs. When bookings and parts availability allow, we will attempt to solve problems on the spot, but we may need to re-book another repair visit depending on the nature of the problem.
