Before you purchase your gate motor, consider some of the following factors which may help to select the right product for you:
Style Of Gate: SWING OR SLIDE and DOUBLE OR SINGLE
There are 2 types of commonly used automatic gates;
- Swing Gates
- Slide Gates
You’ll need to determine the style of gate you have in order to choose the correct motor. Both styles may be a single or double gate structure, see below.
Swing Gates
A popular choice for many homeowners, swing gates are available in many styles. From simple cladding to architecturally designed gates aiming to increase privacy, to bespoke steel swing gates for high security applications.
Each gate is bolted to a post with a concrete footing that is engineered to provide adequate weight to counterbalance the system. The combination of gate design and concrete footing allows the gate to swing out over the relevant road opening without tipping or sagging.
Swing gates will require either “Linear Actuated Openers or Articulated Arm Openers” to open and close the gate. This will depend on the weight of the gate being automated.
Slide Gates
- Safe, reliable and more secure than many other gate types.
- Economical in regard to the space and an excellent solution if you have uneven ground or a driveway on a slope.
- Sliding gates are installed on tracks in a full range of sizes and motor speeds.
- Sliding gates as the name suggests have a track/rack on the ground.

Connection type: high voltage or low voltage?
Solar Energy, Battery, AC Power?
Gate openers use different power sources. In the past, all gate openers used AC power, now, you can install a solar panel, use a DC motor and have battery-powered gate openers. Or you can combine all these sources. The solar panel can store power for later. A very useful option is battery backup, in case of power failure.
It’s important to ascertain the level of power voltage you have available to power your gate, so you can match this correctly to the gate motor for you. If in doubt, check with a registered electrician.
Gate weight
The total weight of your gate will determine the level of power needed by the Gate Opener to adequately operate it. If you have a double gate system, you will need to determine the weight of each section of gate.
